Chinese landscape scroll, freely drawn colored inks on silk, mounted on a shimmering, light and dark gold and grey, silk … Read more Chinese landscape scroll, freely drawn colored inks on silk, mounted on a shimmering, light and dark gold and grey, silk brocade in a leafy floral vines under an oracle bone script, lattice pattern, signed, on the lower right with one red seal mark and several red seal marks at the lower left. The exterior cover repeats the mounting. The scroll has a white cord makio and kakio at the top and light mahogany jikusaki at the bottom. Circa Republic of China era, no later than mid century.

The image size is 23.625" wide x 43" high.

In the foreground, a finely painted, forested, mountain scene of three taoists, singing and playing the guzheng on the rocky shores of a bubbling brook, between mountain parapets on each side with groves of gnarled pines, flowering plants, bushes and grasses, with two acolytes, one one which is crossing the foot bridge below bringing lunch the other holding a sheng. The brook recedes on the upper left into rising, misty clouds, as a lone traveler takes a fenced, ascending path towards a mountain viewing hut near the top of the center massif. On the right, a waterfall cascades between steep, pine forested banks. A small mountain hermitage can be seen behind the firs. See less
