"We count ourselves fortunate that Stewart Holbrook of Portland, Oregon has been able to set down for us these memories of his fellow citizen, Mr. Otis, surely one of the most original and vivid painters of our time. It may be asked in this day of television and radio why the public has had to wait so long for a volume which brings together for the first time both the masterpieces and the merely great paintings of this American master. Readers of these lines may even ask "Who is Mr. Otis? " It is no disrespect towards that part of the country, designated by Stewart Holbrook himself as the Far Corner, to say that even today it is a trifle isolated, not of course in any cultural sense, but in terms of actual distance from the art centers of New York and still more of Paris. These things exact their toll. But communication, as it always will be, has been established, Mr. Otis has come into his own, and with the publication of this volume he may confidently look forward to an established reputation, if not perhaps entirely free from the sniping of certain groups.
