An Exceptional Quality Mid 18th Century Chippendale Period Georgian Mahogany Serpentine Commode, Or Chest, Retaining Wonderful Rich Colour And Surface Throughout, Having Well Figured Shaped Top with Moulded Edge, Over Four Long Mahogany Lined Drawers Retaining Their Original Decorated Brass Swan Neck Handles, Flanked By Canted Corners And Raised On Elegant Original Shaped Bracket Feet.
This 18th century serpentine commode is almost certainly inspired directly by some of the items which were being produced by Thomas Chippendale at the time, who is of course known as one of the greatest furniture makers of all time.
It has almost certainly been constructed in one of the very best London cabinet makers workshops of the time, evidenced by the incredibly rich mahogany timbers and also the fact that the internal drawer linings are also constructed using mahogany, something which only the very best furniture makers and workshops could afford to implement.
The chest is of relatively typical design for the period, boasting a bold serpentine shape, however it is much lower and wider than the norm, which is why it may be referred to by some as a commode. This is taken from the french word for chest of drawers and often used to describe english chests of drawers from the 18th century that are both low and wide and which stand with great importance.
The piece still retains its lovely original brass handles and of course its bold original bracket feet, both of which are really nice features. We particularly like the simplicity of the design, something which creates an elegance of its own when combined with the wonderfully rich timbers which have aged so gracefully.
As with all items we offer for sale this georgian serpentine chest has been inspected and attended to in our workshops by our highly skilled, specialist trained, antique furniture restorers and received a natural wax polish before being offered for sale to ensure that it is in excellent condition and ready for immediate placement within the home.
It is extremely rare to find this type of piece and even rarer for it to be in such lovely condition, something very special, but also something which is very functional and still as fit for purpose as the day it was made!
