This Artwork "Eastern Europe Cityscape" 1963 is a watercolor on paper by Latvian artist Janis Brekte, 1920-1985. It is signed and dated at the lower left corner by the artist. The artwork size is 21.5 x 14.25 inches, framed is 29.75 x 22.75 inches. Custom framed in a wooden silver frame, with beige matting and blue bevel. The artwork is in excellent condition, the frame is in very good condition, it have some minor restorations.
About the artist:
Born in Riga in the family of a gardener on August 15 , 1920 , he spent his childhood in Lizum . In 1934, he returned to Riga and studied at the drawing courses of Kārļas Brencēns (1936-1939) and studied at the Latvian Art Academy (1940-1948), where his teachers were Leo Svemps , Nikolajs Breikšs , Kārlis Miesnieks . In 1950, he was admitted to the Union of Artists. Died in Riga, buried in Lizum Sila cemetery.
Daughter - watercolorist Ilona Brekte , her children, twins Kristians Brekte and Patricia Brekte , are also artists.
Honored Artist of the Latvian SSR (1981).
Worked mainly in watercolor technique, rarely in oil technique. [4] He created several thousand watercolors during his lifetime, so he is considered one of the most prolific watercolorists of his time. He gained special recognition for his paintings of Old Riga and Riga in various natural moods and seasons . In the early stages of his artistic activity, he focused on the industrial landscape , painting mainly harbor views, later he focused on the natural landscape, painting forests , mountains , waters , as well as still lifesand flowers. The artist's works are distinguished by an individual, cultivated handwriting with a characteristic loose and free flow, bright color accents and a tendency to raise a specific motif to the level of generalization. Most important personal exhibitions were organized in Riga (1977, 1980), Jelgava (1981).
Memorial exhibitions – in Cesis (1986) and Riga (1991, 1992).
J. Brekte was a member of Artists Union (since 1950).
In 1981 he got a title of rich of merits employee of art in Latvia Republic of Soviet Union.
It was one of the most popular and prolific aquarelle master of his time.
