A 1973 oil on canvas still life painting by American artist Sidney Smiley (1912-2002). This painting depicts a vase of flowers in thick strokes of bright orange, pink, dark blue, and white. Displayed in a black wooden frame, the painting is signed and dated on the bottom right.
Born in Canada, Smiley started life as a musician, as opposed to an artist, and studied Seattle’s Cornish School of Music, as well as the University of Washington, and the Chicago Conservatory of Music. During the 1940s, he played with the Radio City Music Hall Orchestra and the Houston Symphony Orchestra. It was during the 1960s that Smiley turned to visual art and began painting.
