Though time has left its marks on this powerful sculpture, the genius of the Baroque master who carved it remains fully apparent.
This figure of Christ, dating to around 1700, was once the centerpiece of a grand church altarpiece, originally brought to life with vibrant colour over a gesso base, traces of which remain. The carving of the drapery is a tour de force of movement. The missing arm reveals a fascinating detail of its master-level construction: a socket for a separately carved limb, a technique of the finest workshops.
Now a noble fragment, this piece tells a story of 300 years.
For a collector who appreciates the soul of an object, this is a rare opportunity.
