A superb and highly dynamic carved oak panel representing an Allegory of Faith. Dating to the last quarter of the 17th century, this piece is a tour-de-force of Northern European High Baroque sculpture. The subject is a sophisticated one: the female figure of Fides (Faith) is depicted holding a chalice and a cross, the principal symbols of Christian dogma.
The carving is of exceptional quality, particularly in the deeply undercut, swirling drapery that seems to defy the solid oak from which it is carved. This theatrical sense of movement and emotional intensity is the very hallmark of the great workshops of Flanders (Antwerp) and Southern Germany (Augsburg) during the Counter-Reformation. The use of solid oak is also characteristic of the finest works from this region.
This is a powerful and intellectually engaging piece for the discerning collector of European sculpture.
Measurements:
• Height: 60.5 cm
• Width: 17 cm
• Thickness: approx. 6 cm
• Weight: 1184 g
Condition: Excellent antique condition with a deep, dark patina. The carving is exceptionally crisp and well-preserved with no significant damages or repairs. There are minor surface marks and age-related shrinkage as would be expected.
