Entitled “a view of the city of vienna, the capital of germany,” the print was engraved by t. Coleman for middleton’s complete system of geography, an ambitious multi-volume work first published in london around 1777. The view shows vienna from across the river danube, its skyline crowded with church spires and crowned by the imposing gothic tower of st. Stephen’s cathedral. Below the city walls, small boats navigate the river while figures and carriages animate the foreground landscape.
