This Late Meiji Kyoto Satsuma vase by Gyokuzan exemplifies the refined, design-driven ceramics created for high-end collectors at the close of the 19th century. The baluster form is enriched with exquisitely painted scenes of noblemen and court ladies in conversation before serene pavilions and wooded hills, executed with expressive micro-detail and finely patterned kimono. Raised gilt moriage and coloured enamels frame these narrative panels with rhythmic geometry — shippo, asanoha and seigaiha motifs — bringing a tactile interplay of texture, ornament and movement across an elegant ivory crackle glaze.
Signed to the base in gilt 大日本 薩摩 玉山 (Dai Nippon Satsuma Gyokuzan), the piece embodies both cultural heritage and visual sophistication. Its compact yet sculptural proportions make it a strong focal point on a console, bookshelf or mantel, where the richness of its decoration can contrast beautifully with contemporary furnishings. A luxury accent for curated interiors, it offers collectors and design-minded homeowners an artwork of enduring craftsmanship, perfectly suited to eclectic and modern spaces alike.
