An exceptional late-Meiji Satsuma vase by the renowned Kinkozan atelier of Kyoto, c. 1875. Defined by its commanding silhouette and rare architectural detailing, this piece presents a dramatically modelled neck with sculptural bamboo-form crossbar handles — an ambitious and highly unusual design reserved for prestigious commissions.
The finely crackled ivory glaze forms a sophisticated canvas for a dynamic scene of armoured samurai advancing beneath gold-washed cloud scrolls, their armour articulated with raised moriage enamels and precise gilding. The reverse is adorned with textile-inspired geometric ornament, balancing complexity with refined spatial rhythm. The colour palette — gold, deep brown, soft ivory, crimson and black — harmonises beautifully with rich woods, bronze and contemporary neutrals alike. The base carries the hand-brushed mark of Kinkozan (錦光山造), confirming the workshop’s authorship. A custom carved hardwood stand elevates the vase’s proportions and enhances its sculptural presence.
This is a rare and important statement work of Meiji-period craftsmanship, ideal for a sophisticated interior where art and design intersect. It performs beautifully as a single focal point on a console, pedestal or architectural niche — or within a curated arrangement of Japanese and contemporary pieces.
