Evian water bottles, antique and modern.
Two incredible Evian water bottles.
There are 122 years of age between the two bottles, there have been some changes in the shape of the bottles over this period of time.
The hermetic seal on the millennium bottle is still in place therefore the bottle is still full of pure genuine Evian water, unfortunately the 1878 year old Evian bottle has been opened and the contents drunk.
Evian water was discovered by a French nobleman in 1789, the Marquis de Lessert.
He was out for a walk when he became thirsty and knelt beside a spring which turned out to be no ordinary spring.
It was locally owned and named the Cachat source in Évian-les-Bains, Its owner Monsieur Cachat began selling water to the wealthy local community. Soon after, the people wanted more than just to drink the water, they wanted to bathe in it. In 1806, the first thermal spa opened, followed in 1826 by the first bottling facility installed on the site of the Cachat source. Its popularity attracted visitors from all over Europe and the USA.
In 1859 the French public company “Societe anonyme des eaux minerales de Cachet“ was formed, this was to develop the activities of thermal bathing and water bottling. In 1869 the company Eaux Minérales d'Évian was founded, in 1878 the water from the spring was approved by the Academy of Medicine and awarded at the World Exhibition.
The name Evian comes from the Celtic word “evianus” meaning living water.
The 1878 Evian bottle is 32cm high x 8cm in width at the bottom.
The Millenium Evian bottle is 26cm high in total x 11cm in width at the widest part of the bottle. This piece has an attribution mark,
