Pair of Large Mythological Canvases: Bacchus and Diana, European School France ), 19th Century This set consists of two large-format oil paintings on canvas depicting Bacchus and Diana, deities of Greco-Roman mythology. Bacchus appears as a young nude, crowned with vine leaves, covered with a red cloak, and in a relaxed attitude, within a wooded landscape evoking the Dionysian world. Diana, identifiable by her bow, quiver of arrows, crescent moon on her forehead, and hunting dog, is shown in an elegant veiled nude, with a direct gaze at the viewer and a restrained expression of movement. The works reflect the 19th-century academic taste for mythology and the exaltation of the nude, with neoclassical and romantic echoes. They feature delicate modeling of the flesh tones and antique crackle typical of their time, framed in period gilt moldings that underline their monumentality. 122.5x94 - canvas 110x80.5 This piece is attributed to the mentioned designer/maker.
