Anton maria piola (genoa, 1654 – 1715) circle
madonna and child
genoese school, second half of the 17th century
oil on canvas (93 x 74 cm - in an antique frame 110 x 92 cm)
(work accompanied by an expert opinion by dr. Arabella cifani)
in this delightful work, depicting a classic nativity scene, the madonna is immortalized in adoration, gently holding the sheet on which the child lies, a gesture of protection and pride that fosters an atmosphere of intimate contemplation, in addition to the presence of three cherubs at the top.
a stylistic analysis of the canvas easily traces its execution to a painter of the genoese school, active during the 17th century, specifically the devotional works from the workshop of domenico piola (genoa, 1627–1703), a key figure in genoese baroque culture.
in particular, the style of our beautiful painting is similar to that of his son anton maria piola (genoa, 1654–1715), who favored intimate devotional compositions and continued a family painting tradition, clearly recognizable in the typology of the faces with their sweet expressions, the rendering of the billowing and opaque draperies, the tendency to flatten volumes and space, and the color palette that emphasizes the prevalence of cool tones, with a dominant gray-blue hue, and aligns the apex of light with the spatial center of the scene, which in this case is the baby jesus, who emanates light with his pure white robes and the gray-blue hues of the virgin's robe.
