Frontispiece for "Crimée - 2nde Partie - Madjar à Bakhtchy, realized by Auguste raffet and published by Lemercier between 1837 and 1839. This image is part of the large series Crimée (Voyage en Russie méridionale et en Crimée), which illustrated the expedition of Anatole de Demidoff, a wealthy Russian patron who led a scientific and artistic mission to southern Russiaand the Crimean Peninsula in 1837. The published atlas (Paris, 1840–42) contained over 100 lithographic plates drawn by Raffet during the journey and printed by Lemercier. Raffet documented local peoples, costumes, trades, and landscapes, often with ethnographic accuracy. Not signed, as issued, matted and in very good condition. This piece is attributed to the mentioned designer/maker. It has no attribution mark and no
official proof of authenticity,
however it is well documented in design history. I take full responsibility for any authenticity
