The composition portrays two figures—one playing the piano, the other the flute—immersed in the shared emotion of chamber music. Flameng’s mastery of line, texture, and tonal modulation brings depth to the soft light, the grain of the piano, and the quiet concentration of the musicians. Executed in Dresden in 1863, the work pays homage to the Romantic spirit of Robert Schumann, evoking both artistic devotion and domestic harmony. It is a particularly fine example of Flameng’s virtuosity as one of the foremost French etchers of his generation and a central figure of the Société des Aquafortistes.
