——
Inji Efflatoun (1924–1989) was one of Egypt’s most important modernist painters and a pioneering feminist figure.
Born into an aristocratic family in Cairo, she studied under the influential Surrealist artist Kamel El-Telmissany, who encouraged her to explore themes of identity, freedom, and social justice.
In the 1940s, she became associated with the Art and Freedom movement a collective that introduced Surrealism to Egyptian art.
Later, her art evolved to reflect her political activism and empathy for the working class, particularly during her imprisonment from 1959 to 1963, where she continued to paint.
Her works have been exhibited internationally in Rome, Paris, Berlin, Moscow, São Paulo, and New Delhi, and are held in major collections and museums around the world.
