Original 1957 burin engraving that was part of the 1990 Jean Couy retrospective at Musée de Saint-Maur Villa Médicis. Printed on deckled-edge BFK Rives paper; strong impression with visible plate lines. Sheet size: 19 x 26 inches; print size: 11-1/2 x 15-1/2. Shipped rolled. Mint condition, from the private collection of a member of the Print Club of New York.
Jean Couy (1910–1983) was a French artist known for his poetic, lyrical style across painting, drawing, and printmaking. Born in Paris in 1910, he studied engraving at the École des Beaux-Arts and began exhibiting as early as 1929. Influenced by solitude, memory, and nature, Couy developed a body of work marked by delicate lines, soft colors, and dreamlike imagery. His career spanned over five decades, with exhibitions at major French salons (including Réalités Nouvelles) and international biennales. He worked in Montparnasse and in the Allier region, where he drew inspiration from the rural landscape. Couy's work is represented in several public collections, including the British Museum. After his death in 1983, his legacy continued through the creation of the Prix Jean Couy, awarded to young engravers.
