This vintage hand carved and colorfully painted mask depicting a Monkey, with its vibrant black surface adorned with yellow /red and white dots that display minor wear and loss . Measuring 15" h by 9" w by 7" D,
this significant piece was once a part of the elaborate masquerade culture of the Bamana city of Segou and the Bozo region of Mopti. During the Sogo ba masquerade, young men in youth groups would sing, dance, play drums, and perform with puppets or masks, all with the intention of conveying messages about morality and the importance of ethical behavior, religious beliefs, and social and family stability.
