A Large and Rare Federal Carved Giltwood and Eglomise Overmantel Mirror. Mirror is flanked by double gilt columns on each side, with mirrored inserts that enhance the sense of depth and light. Frame is carved with delicate gilt foliate and ribbon motif. Center front top features a rectangular ebonized and gilt eglomise (reverse-painted glass) panel with gilt ribbons and swags of foliate design. During the Federal period, mirrors like this were central decorative elements in refined American homes, often hung above fireplaces to reflect candlelight and add grandeur to the parlor.
