For Whom the Bell Tolls 1940 First Edition by Ernest Hemingway New York Charles Scribner’s Sons
For Whom the Bell Tolls is a novel by Ernest Hemingway about Robert Jordan, an American volunteer fighting for the Republicans in the Spanish Civil War. His mission is to blow up a strategically important bridge behind enemy lines to aid a Republican offensive. While on his mission, Jordan joins a group of guerrillas, falls in love with a young woman named María, and learns about the complexities of war and humanity from the diverse characters he meets.
The novel explores the brutality and dehumanizing aspects of war, the nature of heroism, and the interconnectedness of humanity. The title itself, taken from John Donne, suggests that all human suffering is shared.
