"The Discovery of America by Christopher Columbus" by the Spanish surrealist artist Salvador Dalí.
This piece is a color lithograph of the original painting, signed in the bottom right corner and numbered 145/300 in the bottom left corner of the print.
The work combines historical, religious, and personal elements. As a devout Roman Catholic, Dalí portrays a young Christopher Columbus as a "Christian savior". The figure of the Virgin Mary on the banner held by Columbus is actually Dalí's wife, Gala. The work also pays homage to Spain and Dalí's home region of Catalonia, incorporating figures like Saint Narcissus of Girona, the patron saint of a city near Dalí's home in Figueres.
The original painting is a monumental oil on canvas, measuring over 14 feet tall and 9 feet wide, which Dalí completed between 1958 and 1959. It is part of a series of large-scale works he created during this period. The original is housed at the Salvador Dalí Museum in St. Petersburg, Florida. The painting was commissioned by Huntington Hartford for his Gallery of Modern Art in New York City.
