19th Century French Sevres Porcelain Hand Painted Cup & Saucer
The cup is cylindrical and features a hand-painted scene of a rooster standing on a grassy hill, surrounded by a gilt frame. The rest of the cup's exterior has a deep cobalt blue background with intricate gold gilding. The saucer also has a cobalt blue background with extensive gold gilding. The center of the saucer has a prominent, ornate gold design that resembles a rosette or stylized floral medallion.
The use of bleu de roi (king's blue) combined with delicate hand-painted animal figures and elaborate gold work is a signature of Sèvres-style porcelain, particularly from the 19th century. This type of porcelain was highly prized for its decorative quality and craftsmanship. The rooster motif on the cup is an example of the kind of ornithological scenes sometimes found on these pieces.
The set is stamped underneath and includes the word "Le Coq" meaning the rooster in French.
