It appears to be just after the season’s first snowfall which lightly dusts the roofs, stream bed and surrounding boulders. One lone figure carrying a pack lingers for a moment on the bridge.
Simply but richly mounted within a brocade-wrapped mat behind glass and within a frame on its own stand, this work was meant to be set on a flat surface to be experienced instead of hung on a wall. It was apparently created for enjoyment within a society that traditionally built homes without interior load-bearing walls.
The artist leaves us a suggestive note in the upper right corner on just how to enjoy the work. One translation: “Gradually reaching a beautiful or pleasant state," or "gradually entering a better state." It can also mean "getting into the zone" in a creative sense. And who doesn’t want that?
