This large scale piece is comprised of blocks of bright colors atop a cornflower blue background. The blocks of color are primarily rendered in large, visible brushstrokes. The movement of these shapes is then further emphasized by bold black linework, which moves around and alongside the shapes. Overall this creates an energetic composition which quickly captures the viewers eye. Reminiscent of Kandinsky and Hofmann and Emily Sillman, the piece celebrates the interplay of spontaneity and structure within a modernist vocabulary.

Ellis Hopkins (American, b. 1952) was born in Lawrence, Kansas, but spent most of her life in California. She lived in Monterey and Carmel Valley, where she was a prolific painter, focusing mostly on gestural abstraction, color blocking, and abstracted still lifes. She studied at the Carmel Art Institute.
