This large scale composition features bold, gestural linework and brushstrokes which interact with blocks of dynamic color. Large swaths of grey, reddish browns, and deep blues make up a large portion of this composition. These more neutral colors are then punctuated by areas of orange, cyan, magenta, and yellow. Throughout the piece there are areas of dripping texture, likely created through the use of a thinning medium, which add more textural interest and movement. Reminiscent of Kandinsky and Hofmann and Emily Sillman, the piece celebrates the interplay of spontaneity and structure within a modernist vocabulary.

Ellis Hopkins (American, b. 1952) was born in Lawrence, Kansas, but spent most of her life in California. She lived in Monterey and Carmel Valley, where she was a prolific painter, focusing mostly on gestural abstraction, color blocking, and abstracted still lifes. She studied at the Carmel Art Institute.
