This abstract composition features bold brushstrokes and highly contrasting colors. A large blue shape careens towards the bottom left corner, outlined in bold black brush work. This shape is then broken up by a swath of yellow ochre and more black brush strokes which are further emphasized by a textured layer of white on top. Outside of this shape are areas painted in deep cadmium hues, contrasting the blue tones. Above this action is a space of neutral brown and grey tones where a viridian green square, rendered in a single visible stroke, rests. Reminiscent of Kandinsky and Hofmann and Emily Sillman, the piece celebrates the interplay of spontaneity and structure within a modernist vocabulary.

Ellis Hopkins (American, b. 1952) was born in Lawrence, Kansas, but spent most of her life in California. She lived in Monterey and Carmel Valley, where she was a prolific painter, focusing mostly on gestural abstraction, color blocking, and abstracted still lifes. She studied at the Carmel Art Institute.
