This dynamic piece features textured blocks of color which resemble an abstracted landscape or still life. Blue and cyan sections compose the majority of the space. These are then overlayed by yellows, oranges, and bright cadmium reds. Visible brush and palette knife marks are visible throughout the piece. The composition and handling of the paint is reminiscent of Diebenkorn's landscapes, where aspects such as fields and roads are reduced to blocks and slashes of color. Reminiscent of Kandinsky and Hofmann and Emily Sillman, the piece celebrates the interplay of spontaneity and structure within a modernist vocabulary.

Ellis Hopkins (American, b. 1952) was born in Lawrence, Kansas, but spent most of her life in California. She lived in Monterey and Carmel Valley, where she was a prolific painter, focusing mostly on gestural abstraction, color blocking, and abstracted still lifes. She studied at the Carmel Art Institute.
