Untitled Abstracted Portrait by David Fludd (American b. 1965).
This moody and dynamic portrait is an excellent example of Fludd's work in the 1990s, which often featured distorted or darkened portraits with fluid mark making and experiments with materiality. An individuals face is depicted here in a deep warm brown color, distinguishing itself from the cooler and darker color of the background. The top of their torso is visible and their arms appear to be resting along a surface at the bottom of the painting. Their body is rendered in deeper blues and greens with multiple layers of paint visible. These more subtle colors are occasionally interrupted by bright shocks of magenta, viridian, and cobalt. Some areas of the piece are glazed with a highly glossy material, adding increased contrast.
David Fludd was born in New York in 1965. His father, Reginald Fludd, was also an artist and introduced him to art at a young age. Fludd attended Morehouse College where he received a Bachelors of Art. He enjoyed early success in his career, winning a top prize at Huntingtown Township Art League juried exhibition in 1988. He received his Master of Fine Arts in painting and printmaking from Yale's School of Art in 1991. He further studied printmaking at both New York University and Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture. Fludd was the artist in residence at the Studio Museum in Harlem in 1992. In 1998 he was awarded the prestigious Guggenheim Fellowship, and in 2000 the Rome Prize from the American Academy in Rome. He was an artist in residence at the Main Street Arts Center in New York in 2019 and in 2024 he was awarded a MacDowell Fellowship. His art is housed in major collections across the United States, such as the National Gallery of Art, the Studio Museum in Harlem, the Petrucci Family Collection of African American Art, and the Walter O. Evans Collection of African American Art.
