San Francisco Bay Area abstract expressionist landscape by Honora Berg (American, 1897-1985). A brilliant example of the bold abstracted landscape of a mid-century Bay Area hillside neighborhood. The composition is filled with houses, trees, and rolling hills, arranged in a patchwork-like pattern that flattens perspective, lending a whimsical and almost childlike quality to the work. Bold white outlines define the forms, while the interior spaces are filled with washes of muted reds, greens, and browns. The brushstrokes are loose and rhythmic, giving the piece a dynamic, almost mosaic-like surface. The painting captures a sense of place through symbolic shapes and patterns rather than realistic depiction, reflecting Berg's roots in Bay Area Abstract Expressionism and her affinity for stylized, semi-figurative structure.

Provenance: Larry Miller (1958-2003) was a specialist in bay area abstract artists and purchased numerous bay area artists estates. He purchased the entirety of the Honora Berg Estate and we purchased many of those works directly from Larry.

Honora Berg, an Abstract Expressionist and Bay Area Figurative School artist, studied at the San Francisco Art Institute with David Park, Elmer Bischoff and James Budd Dixon. Berg's friend Edith Truesdell — David Park's aunt — suggested a move to California in 1951 to study under Park. She exhibited at the 25th Annual Drawing, Print and Sculpture Exhibition at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, 1961. See less
