This work comes from the notorious and unscrupulous Knoedler Gallery in New York, which closed in 2011 after 165 years in business. They made headlines after news broke of 24 forgeries that were sold imitating Mark Rothko, Jackson Pollock, and others. Knoedler had an impeccable reputation and placed major works into the hands of collectors such as J.P Morgan and Henry Frick, and in major institutions worldwide. This work is from an Upper East Side estate and bears paper labels for Knoedler and for Galerie Lawrence Paris, which also widely exhibited and sold works from famous 20th-century abstract expressionists.
