Syrian brass lamps have a long history, with their roots in the metalwork of the Mamluk dynasty, which ruled over parts of Egypt and Syria from 1250 to 1517. During this period, skilled artisans in cities like Aleppo and Damascus were known for producing elaborate and decorated metal objects.
While lamps were initially used for both religious and secular purposes, by the 14th century, they were primarily commissioned by the Mamluk elite for mosques, mausoleums, and religious schools.
Syrian brass lamps with intricate filigree patterns and dangling beads were also produced in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The technique for inlaid metalwork spread rapidly in the 13th century, with many metalworkers fleeing the Mongol invasion and bringing their skills to Syria.
