Joe Nicastri (American, born 1945), According to Plan, 1997. sculptural hanging installations composed of burned books suspended by steel chains and meat hooks. Each unit contains approximately two hundred banned books visibly burned - none identified as prayer books. Executed in wood, steel, chain, and altered books, the work addresses themes of censorship, cultural memory, and historical trauma, aligning with Nicastri's broader conceptual practice exploring Holocaust and postwar narratives. Unsigned. Each unit measures approximately 50 x 22 x 18 inches. Provenance: Originally installed at the Museum of Art Fort Lauderdale in 1997 as part of Nicastri's exhibition titled The Reiss Family Collection: SURPLUS OF MEMORY - A Focus on the Holocaust and postwar narratives
