This is a Chinese hand-carved wooden statue, depicting the legendary figure Jiang Ziya (also known as Jiang Taigong), a famous general and strategist from ancient China.
In Chinese folklore, Jiang Ziya is known for his wisdom and patience. He is famously said to have fished not for fish, but for a ruler to serve, using a straight hook or no bait at all. His fishing was a symbolic act of waiting for the right opportunity to use his talents. This carving is a representation of this well-known story.
