The transplanted New England ambiance led to Mendocino serving as the mythical “Cabot Cove, Maine” for the long-running television show “Murder, She Wrote.”
Plein-air artist and muralist Ray Strong spent his summers painting in this area, even after settling in Santa Barbara later in his career. Additionally, Strong co-founded the Art Students League of San Francisco as well as The Oak Group—the latter for painters like him who focused on preserving natural landscapes.
