A still life on heavily textured canvas by Spanish artist and author ADOLFO RUIZ ABASCAL (1929-2012). The homely subject features fruit, a basket, and a draped white cloth arranged on a stone ledge. The traditional composition is informed by Cubist influence; the soft lighting produces realistic three-dimensional effects. Not readily identifiable to us, the fruit in and around the basket may include pomegranates and plums or some other stone fruits typical of central Spain. With its dark green skin, pale flesh, and oval shape, the large cut melon is likely a Piel de Sapo (toad skin). Signed at the bottom right and currently unframed.
ADOLFO RUIZ ABASCAL (1929-2012) was a Spanish painter and author. His artwork primarily concentrated on depictions of the landscapes and architecture of his homeland, particularly those of Toledo and the El Escorial region, where his cherished hometown of San Lorenzo was situated. His creative approach varied and is often characterized as Cubist-influenced.
While recognized for his achievements in the visual arts, Abascal was also a respected specialist in the natural habitat surrounding El Escorial, the large architectural complex northwest of Madrid, envisioned by King Philip II and built to function as royal residence, monastery, library, and mausoleum. Released in the 1990s, Abascal’s most notable publication, Del Entorno Escurialense (Of the Escorial Surroundings), detailed and illustrated the environment and historical context of the area. In its discussion of the various shades of color that nature offers to those who will pay attention, the book describes the yellow of the local botón de oro (buttercup) as “the perfection of yellow.”
