Offered for sale is a Native American Woven Basket by Elsie Watty. The basket is White Oak Basket with checkerboard weave and walnut and blood root dyes, includes label from Certified Indian Enterprise. Measures 12"H x 13"W.

This basket was acquired as a group of 4 and all are available in separate listings. The basket retains the original tags and in like-new condition.

Elsie Welch Watty (b. 1935) was a master Cherokee basket weaver known for her white oak baskets with finely woven, tight weaves and richly patterned native dye designs. Her baskets are highly collectible and were exhibited at cooperatives like the Qualla Arts and Crafts Mutual. Her techniques involved making the bottom splints thicker for durability and creating her own designs.
Background: Watty was born in 1935 and was a member of the Eastern Band of Cherokee. She learned to make baskets by observation and began at age 10.
Her baskets were praised for their uniform, tight weave and detailed, colorful patterns from native dyes. She was known for specific techniques, such as using butternut instead of walnut and making the basket's base splints thicker than the sides to increase stability.
Her work was exhibited in 1977 at the Qualla Arts and Crafts Mutual, and her pieces are held in collections like the National Museum of the American Indian.
