GORGEOUS OIL ON PANEL CITYSCAPE / LANDSCAPE PETRUS GERARDUS VERTIN (1819-1893)
DIMENSIONS About 6 1/2" x 8 1/4" sight size. 10 3/4" x 12 1/2" overall.
DESCRIPTION Beautiful oil on mahogany wood panel of the drawbridge at the Oude Sluis ("Old Lock") at Vreeswijk, Nieuwegein, Utrecht, the Netherlands, an old wooden bridge at the heart of the village of Vreeswijk, Nieuwegein near Utrecht. Signed lower left "P. G. Vertin." Framed in a deep cove gilt and gesso frame. Petrus Gerardus Vertin (also known as Pierre-Gérard Vertin and Pieter Gerard Vertin) was a Dutch painter and graphic artist living in The Hague. His works focused on Dutch townscapes and streets. His works are in several Dutch museums, including the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, the Gemeentemuseum in The Hague, and the Centraal Museum in Utrecht. He was a student of Bartholomeus Johannes van Hove. His work often focused on streets, town squares, bridges and canals at different times of the year and presenting different weather situations.
CONDITION Overall excellent. No chips, paint loss or craquelure. Colors vibrant and unfaded. Some nearly microscopic white flecks lower right (all visible in the images). A LOVELY VILLAGESCAPE PAINTING BY A WELL KNOWN DUTCH 19TH CENTURY ARTIST IN EXCELLENT CONDITION.
