Elegant hand-painted glass whiskey decanter advertising Sedgwick Rye, dating to the late 19th century. This example was part of the classic back-bar display sets used in saloons and hotels to decant whiskey from bulk stock into attractive counter bottles.
The lettering is done in freehand gold enamel in a period-appropriate font, softly worn with age. The ground-glass faceted stopper fits snugly and appears original to the piece.
Though Sedgwick Rye was an American-market brand, its roots trace back to the Sedgwick Distillery of South Africa, founded in the 1880s by the sons of importer Captain James Sedgwick.
