The Yearling is a novel by American writer Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings, published in March 1938. It was the main selection of the Book of the Month Club in April 1938. It won the 1939 Pulitzer Prize for the Novel. It was the best-selling novel in the United States in 1938, when it sold more than 250,000 copies.
This book is the 1950 Pulitzer Prize edition with 14 color illustrations by
N. C. Wyeth.
Critics have said that no novel better epitomizes the love between a child and a pet than The Yearling. This American classic shows the "ultimate bond between child and pet." Young Jody adopts an orphaned fawn he calls Flag and makes it a part of his family and his best friend. But life in the Florida backwoods is harsh, and so, as his family fights off wolves, bears, and even alligators, and faces failure in their tenuous subsistence farming….
