An antique Indian pictorial weaving depicting a single Yei figure surrounded by geometric figures and whirling logs. Most likely from the Gallegos canyon are where the first single figure Yeis were woven. Woven from all Native handspun, long-staple Churro sheep wool, both weft and warp. There is the presence of the characteristic lazy lines proper of the Navajo textiles.
An amazing, historic and authentic Navajo weaving which most likely was woven in the 1920s or 30s and probably from the Gallegos Trading Post area. This is a Hopi kachina depicted in large scale. During this time frame, the Navajo elders would not allow a Navajo God, Yei or deity to be drawn or woven in any form of art. It was strictly forbidden. So this enterprising woman used a Hopi deity and then there was no problem. Several large pieces have been found in the passing years, but not very many. This rug is 47" by 34" and is dramatic in every way. There is one tiny hole which is very hard to get on picture otherwise in great condition. It is made from the wool of sheep, which was most likely gathered by the weaver and it also has used natural dyes.
Yei figures are believed to have healing powers and act as intermediaries between the Navajo people and their gods. They are often shown in a stylized, front-facing manner, carrying ceremonial items like rattles or pine boughs.
