Silver Gelatin photographic Print of York Minster Cathedral, the Nave Looking East by Edwin Smith (British b. 1912 d. 1971.)

This striking print captures the atmospheric and ethereal quality of light within York Minster, constructed between 1220 and 1472. The windows all appear to glow from the outside light, with rays shining through and illuminating the intricate architecture within the cathedral. The arches recessing provide a sense of movement and pattern within the image.

The original image was taken in 1958 and this silver gelatin print was created by Chris Beetles in 2010 (letter attestation included).

Edwin Smith was a British artist known for his architectural, landscape, and garden photography. He was born in Canonbury, Islington, London in 1912. He began attending the architecture school at Northern Polytechnic (now London Metropolitan University) in 1928 and received a scholarship from the Architectural Association. However, he did not finish school and instead began working as a draftsman and later a freelance photographer. With his wife, Olive Cook, he published numerous books of his work. He died of cancer in 1971 and his archives were later gifted to the Royal Institute of British Architects, who exhibited a retrospective of his work in 2014. See less
