"La Birula de Nenuca" The Bicycle of Nenuca - Original Watercolor Painting.
Contemporary surrealist painting by Marco Antonio Bustamante Underwood (Mexican, b. 1959 d. 2024). This composition is rendered in a variety of bright watercolor colors with detailed and delicate linework. An orange bicycle comprises a large portion of the work. It is fragmented across white tile shapes which, in turn, create a large curved shape, which dominates most of the surface. The placement of the bike across the tiles creates a surreal image and draws upon historical art movements, such as cubism, for inspiration. The gears of the bike are a bright magenta. This magenta gear then repeats in a cascading line from the center of the bike. Surrounding the bike are more tile pieces, which are filled with images of people. At the bottom left of the painting, the tiles depict the top of a persons head. As the pattern continues around the edge it moves down the persons body, showing their red and white striped shirt, magenta and yellow pants, and eventually their shoes. These patterns imbue the piece with a sense of movement. Overall the effect is an intriguing and surreal piece which draws upon movements such as the Pattern and Decoration Movement, which was popular at the time.
Marco Antonio Bustamante Underwood was born in Oaxaca, Mexico on September 12, 1959. He attended the National Conservatory of Music in Mexico City in 1976. In 1979 he continued his study of music at both the Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes y Literatura and the National School of Music at the National Autonomous University of Mexico. Following his education, Bustamante was involved with the Center for Musical Research and Studies at the Royal Board of London in Mexico City. He began working with the Rufino Tamayo Plastic Arts Workshop in Oaxaca City in 1985. There he studied engraving, lithography, and painting with other prominent Mexican artists. Following this, he continued to produce art in Oaxaca until his death on December 13, 2024.
