This fifty-eight piece Coalport porcelain dessert service was made by John Rose & Co. in the Regency years, circa 1815–1825, and is painted in one of the factory’s most lavish chinoiserie designs. Each piece is centered with a Chinese flower group of rose-pink peonies, a crimson many-petaled bloom and yellow-orange blossoms among green and turquoise leaves, rising from a cobalt blue rock with two turquoise roundels and a blue ribbon at its base, every flower edged in gold. The gadrooned rims are gilded and framed with cobalt blue panels worked in gilt seeded diaper and reserved with gilt flowering sprays, alternating with pink pear-shaped cartouches, pink flowers and a pale yellow gilt lattice band at the edge.

The service comprises thirty dessert plates, four shell dishes, four square dishes, four boat-shaped dishes, four circular dishes, two covered round tureens, two covered boat-shaped tureens, two high footed comports and six small square dishes, so it can dress a long table for a large party and still leave dishes for the sideboard. The cobalt, gold and pink read equally well against a dark lacquered dining room, a chinoiserie-papered breakfast room or a plain white modern interior, and the comports and covered tureens make handsome stand-alone pieces on a console or mantel between dinners. Regency dessert services of this size and richness rarely survive together, and this one has the full range of serving shapes that Coalport offered with its finest dessert patterns.

Marks
Unmarked, as is usual for Coalport in this period. The attribution to John Rose & Co. rests on a tea service of the same pattern and design formerly in the firm’s stock, which was marked “WT / English Porcelain” within a scrolled panel with “IR & Co.” below, a mark used by John Rose & Co. and recorded by Godden.
