A fine antique one-gallon salt-glazed stoneware jug by E. Swasey & Co., Portland, Maine, circa 1890. This handsome two-tone jug features a rich brown Albany slip top over a speckled salt-glazed body with bold stenciled lettering inside a framed border reading:
“E. SWASEY & CO. / PORTLAND, ME. / U.S.A.”
The large “1” above the mark denotes the one-gallon capacity. Eben Swasey established his Portland factory in 1890, and the historic brick building on Commercial Street still bears the company name today.
This example retains its full glaze and crisp form with beautiful surface variation and the honest character of early New England stoneware.
Condition: Excellent antique condition. No chips, cracks, or repairs.
Small glaze bubble inside the lip (shown in close-up photo).
A tiny popped glaze bubble in the “1” marking, part of the original firing, not damage.
Minor glaze bumps near the base, typical of 19th-century kiln work.
These details are natural firing irregularities that enhance authenticity and confirm its handmade origin.
Dimensions: Approx. 11″ H × 6.5″ Dia.
Finish: Two-tone brown and natural stone with warm patina and subtle glaze variation.
An exceptional survivor from Maine’s celebrated pottery works — ideal for farmhouse, industrial, or Americana displays.
