A finely cast and cold-painted bronze table lamp from early twentieth-century Vienna made by Franz Bergmann, also known as “Nam Greb”. The piece depicts an orientalist scene set within an architectural canopy supported by twisted columns, crowned by a conical, gilded finial with deep red insets that filter the light from within. Beneath the structure, two male figures animate the composition: one seated with a pipe, the other gesturing toward a vessel on a small brazier, their interaction captured with narrative vitality characteristic of Bergmann’s work. The richly detailed draperies that enclose the scene reveal remarkable craftsmanship in their folds and ornament, while the cold-painted surface emphasizes the contrast between metallic luster and matte pigment. The lamp reflects the Viennese fascination with the exotic at the height of the Jugendstil period, merging the sensual appeal of Art Nouveau design with the theatrical storytelling of Orientalism. At the base of the piece, the inscription "Austria" and a "B" inside an urn can be found, the characteristic signature of Franz Bergmann/Nam Greb.
Bergmann’s bronzes are renowned for their technical refinement and nuanced polychromy, qualities fully expressed in this sculptural composition that bridges fine art and functional object, evoking both the intimacy of domestic lighting and the allure of a faraway world.
The lamp is offered without wiring, though it retains all structural elements for easy electrical fitting if desired.
