This painting depicts a scene of a musical interlude, featuring a man and two women in an opulent interior setting with 18th-century attire. Pompeo Massani (1850-1920) was an Italian painter who was a master of genre scenes, portraits, and figure subjects. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence and was known for his meticulous attention to detail and ability to evoke sentiment.
His paintings often depicted costume genre subjects from the 18th century, sometimes in satirical poses. He was also known for his warm and humorous portrayals of daily life, particularly scenes of old men and merry gatherings.
