A substantial oil landscape showing a view of a barge moored to the bank of the Seine with a view beyond to an arched, stone bridge beneath a luminous evening sky.
Born in Estonia, this Russian-American painter first attended Moscow University before moving to France where he continued his education at the American Conservatory in Paris, the School of Fine Arts at Fontainebleau and, later, in Italy. This educational path explains the polished salon portrait manner seen in his Paris canvases from the period and in his later New York portrait commissions. By 1935, Podryski had opened a studio at New York's Carnegie Hall and become affiliated with the Artist's Union. This union association provided the artist with a professional network that mounted frequent group shows and juried projects, placing him at the center of the Depression-era exhibition and portrait circuit. He is also among the circle of Fontainebleau alumni shown as exhibiting at the 6th Annual Fontainebleau Alumni Exhibition held in January of 1935. The Fontainebleau alumni continued to organize exhibitions in New York throughout the 1930's and Podryski also exhibited with success at the Artists Union show entitled "The Social Scene" at the ACA Gallery (1936) as well as with the Municipal Art Committee (1936).
By 1945, he had moved to Santa Monica, California where he continued to paint society portraits, with clients that included many Hollywood Stars and well-known politicians. We are pleased to offer this lyrical evening view of a sunset over Paris, painted when the artist was in his early thirties.
