TITLE:
Mary Kirk Kelly Signed Cabbage Leaf Dish | Alabama Studio Pottery | Trompe L’oeil Palissy
A charming cabbage leaf dish by renowned Alabama ceramicist Mary Kirk Kelly (1918-2013). This 10-inch trompe l’oeil piece showcases Kelly’s masterful ability to capture nature in ceramic form, with realistic leaf veining and a beautiful green glaze that varies in tone from deep to pale green.
Born and raised in Axis, Alabama, Mary Kirk Kelly came to ceramics later in life after a distinguished career as a teacher. Following her retirement in the 1970s, she began experimenting with clay—a material she knew from childhood through her father’s local brickyard. Initially working with clay from nearby swimming holes to create simple dishes and cups, Kelly discovered her true calling when a neighbor commissioned her to recreate his prized cabbage in ceramic form. This request sparked her passion for naturalistic botanical pottery that would define her artistic legacy.
Hand-signed on the reverse by the artist, this piece exemplifies the Palissy ware tradition while representing an important chapter in Southern folk art and studio pottery. Kelly’s sculptures of vegetables and fruits are highly sought after by collectors of American studio pottery and regional decorative arts.
