Original 1982 silk screen print by Jim Dong, cofounder of the Kearny Street Workshop, the first Asian American multidisciplinary arts collective founded in San Francisco’s Chinatown in 1972. Dong’s work played a defining role in the Asian American arts movement, blending personal and political narratives with bold, graphic expression. His prints have been exhibited at major institutions including the Smithsonian American Art Museum.
The image depicts a man cutting his traditional queue (braid), a powerful symbol tied to the 1911 Xinhai Revolution when Chinese men severed their queues to reject the Qing dynasty and embrace a modern identity. The piece speaks to themes of liberation, transformation, and cultural awakening that echoed through the Asian American experience.
