The lid is made of green onyx; the back, spine, and bindings are made of burnished metal, while the body is made of cherry wood.
The bindings feature a scroll decoration typical of the Art Nouveau period.
The spine of the box faithfully reproduces the spine of a real book (even the color of the metal was chosen with this objective in mind), making it easily camouflaged (and its precious contents) among the books of a library.
The country of manufacture is Austria, and the box comes from the villa of a noble Austrian family.
